Choosing Gloss

04/01/10    Dave Heiligenthal  |  Product Manager, Dunn-Edwards Corporation

For easier selection, Dunn-Edwards has transitioned to seven gloss levels that are visually distinct from one another. These levels are consistent with accepted MPI (Master Painters Institute) standards.

Flat

  • Conceals surface imperfections: ideal for rough, dented, textured walls
  • Provides better touch-up performance: ideal for frequent re-painting
  • Low reflectivity: good for ceilings
  • Stains can be difficult to remove: best for low-volume traffic areas

Velvet

  • Resembles flat paints head on, but show a slight gloss when viewed at an angle
  • More washable surface than flat paints
  • Ideal for high-traffic areas: hallways, long corridors or children’s bedrooms

Eggshell

  • Conveys a greater warmth and depth to surfaces than flat paints
  • Resists stains better than flat or velvet paint
  • Often used on long hallways in convalescent homes, schools and hospitals

Low Sheen

  • Good balance of gloss and cleaning properties
  • Ideal for hallways, bathrooms, children’s rooms, corridors of manufacturing or warehousing facilities, lunch rooms, laundry facilities and cafeteria seating areas
  • Tends to highlight surface imperfections more than flat paints

Semi-Gloss

  • Slightly glossy appearance
  • Good stain resistance and is easy to clean
  • Ideal for rooms requiring frequent scrubbing: kitchens, bathrooms and manufacturing/warehouse facilities
  • Good alternative to gloss paints for windows, trim, cabinets and doors

Gloss

  • Highly reflective appearance imparting a slick, contemporary look
  • Tough, durable and stain-resistant
  • Easier to clean than lower gloss paints
  • Used in bathrooms and on doors and cabinets exposed to fingerprints and grime
  • Can highlight surface imperfections

High Gloss

  • Highest reflective appearance
  • Toughest, most durable and most stain-resistant
  • Easiest to clean
  • Ideal for restrooms, restaurant kitchens, auto repair facilities, and on doors and cabinets exposed to dirt and oil
  • Can emphasize surface imperfections
  • Often used for trim and some woodwork
