Nature to Nurture: 5 Lower Ragsdale

12/19/11    Sara McLean  |  specs+spaces Editor, Dunn-Edwards Corporation, Allied Member ASID, CMG

Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System retained WR&D's Interior Design Division to create a new focal lobby for medical tenants in this off-campus facility. With thoughtful use of Dunn-Edwards paint colors throughout the project, I spoke with Kelley Carpenter,  Communications Director  at WR&D, about the project, design process and company philosophies.

Please describe your collaboration with Salinas Valley Memorial on the 5 Lower Ragsdale project:
The client wanted to create a lobby environment in this large medical facility building that optimized organic finishes and the use of natural light. The interior design team at Wald, Ruhnke & Dost Architects created a free-flowing, unique design that incorporates stone, water, trees, glass, and a large skylight. These design elements are enhanced by the earth-toned paint colors incorporated into the project.”

What was the outcome of the project in terms of public reaction or end results?
“The client and public reactions were very positive for the end result, which is a soothing, beautiful lobby that seats visitors comfortably in a spacious setting. The completed project resulted in additional projects with this long-time client, due to their satisfaction with the overall look and feel of the design and its beneficial effect on the public.”

Have you collaborated with Salinas Valley Memorial prior to 5 Lower Ragsdale? If so, what projects?
“Wald, Ruhnke & Dost Architects has collaborated with Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System on multiple projects. The largest projects include Harden Ranch Medical Campus, the medical facility buildings at 355 Abbott Street and 611 Abbott Street, the Nancy Ausonio Mammography Center, and multiple hospital and medical office projects.”
